Well, some managers need manage up and up, and they are promoted to that position because they were once a top performer. However, that's the start point of being a immoderate manager.

I would suggest any middle managers to seek minimum crossover between employees and upper management. After all, they have to provide necessary information for the boss to expand business. Also, they have to cultivate employees to pick up work till they could handle independently.
